About Birmingham Hall Green Constituency | |
Hall Green is one of ten constituencies in Britain’s second city, Birmingham. The city was previously a world renowned manufacturing centre, and has continued to grow as a major centre of commerce, financial services and business in recent years, as well as being one of Europe’s top cultural destinations. Birmingham Hall Green is for the most part a leafy suburban seat on the southern side of the city. It is comprised of the wards of Brandwood, Billesley, and Hall Green. The constituency is mainly residential in make up and includes a wide variety of households in a mixture of owner-occupied, local-authority owned, and privately rented houses. Taking in the areas of Hall Green, Maypole, Druids Heath, Yardley Wood, Kings Heath, Brandwood, Warstock, and Highters Heath, the constituency’s notable landmarks include Sarehole Mill, which is said to have inspired much of JRR Tolkien’s work, Hall Green Greyhound Stadium, and Cocks Moors Woods Golf course. Previously represented by Conservative MPs, Hall Green switched to Labour in 1997 with the highest swing in Birmingham (14 per cent). Steve McCabe won a majority of 8,420 votes, more than double that achieved by his Tory predecessor in 1992.
