Biography

Steve McCabe Government Whip, 2007-present Assistant Government Whip 2006-2007 Home Affairs Select Committee, 2005-2006 Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Home Secretary, 2004-2005 Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Education Secretary, 2004 Joint Committee on House of Lords Reform, 2003-2005 Northern Ireland Affairs Select Committee, 1998-2003 Deregulation Select Committee, 1997-99 Steve was born in Port Glasgow, a great shipbuilding town on the River Clyde in Scotland. From studying Social Work in Scotland and Bradford in the 1970s and 1980s, Steve worked with young offenders, in child protection, and lecturing in social work at North East Worcestershire College in the late 1980s. After working in Social Services in the area for three years, in 1990 Steve was elected to Birmingham City Council. He was soon made chairman of the transport committee and won an award in 1994 for his committee’s new approach to transport management. He secured the first registration of an urban "village green". Steve has been Member of Parliament for Birmingham Hall Green since the 1997 election, when he won with a majority of 8,420.
