Local Student to Represent UK on Commonwealth day in presence of the Queen | |
Nadira Khan, a student at Aston University and a Billesley resident has been selected as one of the two young people to represent the UK at special event in observance of Commonwealth Day on the 8th March. Nadira is currently doing an internship with me as part of her university degree and I was delighted to nominate her. The event, which has been organised by the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association in order to observe Commonwealth Day, will involve Nadira attending a number of debates with representatives from other commonwealth countries as well as visiting and UK parliamentarians. She will also attend the Westminster Abbey Observance in the presence of all the Commonwealth High Commissioners and Her Majesty the Queen, as well as receiving a prestigious invite to the Commonwealth Secretary-General's reception in the evening at Marlborough House. Nadira has said "I am extremely excited about the event: studying Politics you really get to understand the value of organisations like the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and I am sure this will be a really interesting experience. When I started my internship with Steve I thought I would spend my time stuffing envelopes and making tea; I never thought I would be meeting the Queen!" Nadira is a very bright and capable young woman; which is why I nominated her, I am glad that a young person from Billesley is able to represent the whole of the UK, as well as Birmingham, at such a prestigious event.
