Steve McCabe met with representatives of Guagzhou in China to discuss business and education opportu

On Friday 1st July Steve attended the Executive Forum with representatives of Guangzhou to discuss potential business and education opportunities with Guangzhou and Birmingham. The event was organised by the University of Birmingham and took place at the International Convention Centre.


UK exports to China last year were up 40% and the UK and Germany are now the EU’s largest exporters to China. 400 Chinese companies invest in the UK and China is now the 6th largest investor in the UK. 50 Chinese companies are doing R&D here in the UK either in association with our universities or with British companiesAreas for potential business opportunities are pharmaceuticals. The UK is the world number 2 exporter of pharmaceuticals, an industry which employs 73,000 people, at a time when China is investing heavily in health care and pharmaceuticals.


There were 16 members of the Chinese delegation present including Government officials, business representatives, scientists and health officials.


Steve McCabe said,’ There are real business and education opportunities here. I want Birmingham to be at the forefront of our relations with the Chinese people. There’s tremendous potential in the fields of energy, pharmaceuticals and biomedicine and we must make sure that we demonstrate that we have the knowhow and the enthusiasm to develop proper relations with the world’s biggest and fastest expanding markets.’
