Steve calls on the Government to take action over unemployment.

Steve has called on the Government to take action on unemployment.
Figures newly released today show that the total rate of unemployment in 16-64 year olds has increased by 0.1% to 7.9% for the three months up to June 2011. The figure increased by 38,000 in the same period to reach 2.49 million.
Youth unemployment has increased by 15,000 a 0.2% increase to 20.2%.There are now 949,000 16-24 year olds without work in the United Kingdom.
The number of unemployed women has increased by 21,000 to 1.05 million.
Steve  said:
“The Government must do more to tackle unemployment and to help young people to find a job. A position where more than 1 in 5 young people cannot find work is not sustainable.
“Particularly worrying in these latest figures is the largest number of unemployed women for 23 years.
“I recently introduced a 10 Minute Rule Bill into the House of Commons which calls on the Conservative-led Government to tax bankers' bonuses to pay for a number of measures to tackle youth unemployment.
“These include measures to encourage the employment of apprentices, to support small businesses, and to require banks to support measures to lower youth unemployment.
“I have also been working with employers in my constituency to discover what they need from young people
“The damage to the long term prospects of young people who start their working lives without a job is very worrying. I hope that the Conservative-Liberal Democrat Government will support my 10 Minute Rule Bill to provide jobs and promote growth.”
