Steve raises concerns over plans to axe funding for concessionary travel

Steve McCabe MP, Birmingham Selly Oak, has raised concern in Parliament about the Government’s lack
Steve has been contacted by many of his constituents who are angry at the Government for cutting the funding for concessionary travel, which will end on 31 October 2011.
The scheme currently provides up to half price travel for the over 60’s and disabled people through Government funding. Last year alone over 3 million pensioners and disabled people used the scheme.
Steve said:
“I am really concerned about the Government cuts to concessionary travel. For many pensioners and disabled people the concessionary travel fares are a lifeline, helping them to carry on with their daily lives independently.
The Government are being short-sighted in cutting this funding.
National Express has contacted me, and other MP’s, calling on us to urge the Government to reconsider the decision.
In response to the concerns raised by my constituent and National Express I have sponsored an Early Day Motion which has been signed by 23 of my Westminster colleagues, which calls for the Government to maintain the concessionary travel scheme.”
