'Plans for the Battery Site' - Survey results April 2012

In February Steve asked Selly Oak residents about their views on Sainsbury's plans for the old Selly Oak Battery site.

The key features of Sainsbury's plans include a new 100,000 sq. ft. Sainsbury's food store, a department store and a range of other shops, a petrol filling station, 1600 car parking stations, a canal side area and a canal bridge for pedestrians, student accommodation, offices, hotels and a new GP's surgery.

Steve said:

"I welcome proposals to develop the Battery site but I believe that development should not come at any cost. I do think Sainsbury's have made a genuine effort to listen to the local community and what we want for Selly Oak.

"I am very pleased about their plans for canal side development and the restoration of the Lapal Canal Link, something many residents were in favour of.

"However, I am still concerned for the future of smaller shopping centres like the Bristol Road shops, Stirchley and Cotteridge with such a substantial retail development.

"I'll be keeping a close eye on this application as it makes its way through the planning process."
