Young people in Birmingham Selly Oak are paying the price for this government’s economic failure as long term youth unemployment continues to soar

Steve McCabe has welcomed the fall in unemployment across the country but warns of complacency as long term youth unemployment continues to rise.

Figures released today by the Office for National Statistics show that unemployment across the country fell by 50,000 in the 3 months to August 2012. However in the West Midlands unemployment was up by 5,000 on the previous quarter and now stands at 233,000.

The statistics for youth unemployment were also worrying, showing an increase in the number of young people in Birmingham Selly Oak claiming Jobseekers Allowance and long term youth unemployment is continuing to rise.

Commenting on today’s unemployment figures Steve said:

“Obviously I welcome the fall in unemployment across the country, but the figures show a deeply divided and insecure country. Unemployment was up by 5,000 here in the West Midlands and unemployment is higher than it was at the time of the election in nine out of twelve regions in the country.

"Today’s unemployment figures offer no let up for young people in my constituency who are increasingly shut out of the job market because of this Government’s economic failure.

“Long term youth unemployment here in Birmingham Selly Oak is up 227% in the last year, but ministers still refuse to take decisive action.”
