Steve speaks out against proposed badger cull

Steve asked the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs; Rt Hon Owen Paterson MP, why the Government intended to proceed with the proposed badger cull despite a DEFRA Impact Assessment concluding the cost of the cull would outweigh any benefits to farmers and taxpayers.

The Secretary of State responded by suggesting the cost of not going ahead with the cull would result in a bill of over a billion pounds.

Steve’s question to Mr Paterson took place as part of a debate, held on the 25 October 2012, on the proposed badger cull in response to an e-petition signed by over 150,000 people. The Government went on to lose a vote on a motion calling for a different approach to preventing bovine TB.
