Steve seeks assurances on the future of South Birmingham GP walk-in Centre

Steve has written to the Chair of Birmingham South Central Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) to back South Birmingham GP walk-in Centre following reports that the service could be axed.

In his letter, Steve calls for patients to be placed at the centre of decision-making on the future shape of medical services in the city.

He says he has already received a large number of enquiries from anxious constituents who are concerned at reports that the Katie Road Centre could close and a Facebook page he has opened, on the issue, has been inundated with enquiries and comments.

Steve has reaffirmed his support for the walk-in Centre and asked about the CCG’s plans to consult the public. He said he was surprised at talk of decommissioning a very popular service without any attempt at public consultation.

He has also asked for a copy of the ‘wide-ranging study’, referred to in news reports, which supposedly discusses the closure of eight Birmingham GP walk-in centres.

Steve said: “I certainly haven’t seen this document and nor have any of my Birmingham parliamentary colleagues. I want a copy and it should be made publicly available.

He went on to say that he would be willing to work with the CCG on public consultation and any plans on the future shape of services but he expected to be kept abreast of any proposals affecting existing services and he regarded proper engagement with the public as essential.

“I recognise the tremendous cost pressures on the NHS which the reorganisation has caused and I’m very keen to work with the new commissioning groups but we can’t have the Prime Minister banging on about how he’s protected NHS budgets while popular services are lined up for closure without the public or their elected representatives having any say.”
