Steve McCabe MP, Member of Parliament for Birmingham Selly Oak has slammed the widespread use of zero-hour contracts. The employment contracts, under which staff are not guaranteed work from one week to the next, are becoming increasingly common.

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development has said that the survey of 1,000 employers that it carried out showed that one in five people who are employed are on zero-hours contracts.

It has been reported in the Birmingham Mail that more than 30,000 social care workers in the West Midlands are on zero-hour contracts according to figures released by Health Minister Norman Lamb MP.

Steve McCabe said:

“It is shocking to see how many people in the West Midlands are on these contracts which don’t have minimum guarantees about the pay or conditions of working people. Vince Cable highlighted yesterday that many of those people who are on these contracts are on the margins of society, and it is worrying to see so many people in the West Midlands being employed on these contracts.

“This is a serious issue for working people. Yesterday we heard McDonalds admit that it employs 90% of its UK workforce, some 82,000 people, on zero-hour contracts with no guarantee of work.

“There needs to be action on this by employers and the government. The issue must be addressed to ensure that all paid staff have minimum guarantees of work and pay”.
