Steve McCabe MP visits The Challenge Network to learn about young people’s community action

Steve McCabe paid a visit to The Challenge Network to find out more about the initiative and what it does for young people in the constituency.

One of the challenges that Steve observed was a Dragons’ Den style pitch from five teams of young people, who presented their idea for a campaign based on a local community issues that they were passionate about. Teams were judged by a panel of local professionals and the winning team secured funding to carry out their campaign design at a later date. Steve also got the chance to speak to young people about what they learnt over the summer.

Over the summer period, 720 young people aged 16-17 from South Birmingham took part in a National Citizen Service scheme which brings young people together from different backgrounds and teaches them what it means to be responsible and contribute to their communities. The government scheme is powered by The Challenge Network, the UK’s leading charity for building a more integrated society.

Whilst on the programme, young people are expected to complete a number of challenges which aim to develop their teamwork, leadership, communication and social skills. One of the challenges involves young people building relations with local charities and community organisations in Birmingham, including Birmingham and Solihull Women’s Aid and Help Harry Help Others.

Steve McCabe said:

“It was fantastic to speak to so many enthusiastic young people taking action on local community issues. I was particularly impressed by Team Perham, who were raising awareness about depression amongst young people, their campaign is called Possibility Hope.

“The work that the National Citizen Service and The Challenge Network do really provides young people with a sense of responsibility towards their communities and helps develop their confidence, social skills and creativity, all invaluable skills as these young people make their transition into adulthood”
