Local MP gives support to Selly Oak Battery Site plans

Steve McCabe MP has written to members of Birmingham City Council’s Planning Committee confirming his support for the planning application to transform the former Battery Site in Selly Oak for mixed use development.

The Planning Committee deferred the application for outline planning permission on 5th September 2013 and it is due back at committee on Thursday 17 October.

Since the application was deferred, Steve McCabe and Cllr Karen McCarthy have continued to discuss the concerns of the local community with representatives from Harvest. A site visit and meeting was held on Friday 11 October with representatives from Harvest, Community Partnership for Selly Oak, Tiverton Area Residents Association, the Lapal Canal Trust as well as Steve McCabe MP and Cllr McCarthy.

In response to discussions at this meeting, concerns from the local community and the results of a survey conducted by Steve McCabe MP, Harvest have acknowledged that certain aspects of the plans need further work and have promised to work with the local community and elected representatives in the future:

·         Harvest have agreed that they will continue to work with elected representatives and the local community to reach agreement on the design of academic apartments for Post Graduates, visiting academics and other professionals.

·         Harvest has given a clear commitment to cycle routes to and through their development and again have indicated a desire for ongoing dialogue with the local community.

·         The developers have made clear that they want to provide a ramped access onto the site so as to improve the situation for those with disabilities and parents with pushchairs.

·         They have listened to concerns about the visual presentation of the site and promised again to work with the local community and their representatives to ensure attractive active space and a Green Wall.

·         They have also substantially increased their financial commitment to the Lapal Canal development and indeed if the Lapal group can raise the necessary additional funds they are willing to advance work on the canal alongside the rest of the development.

Steve McCabe MP said:

“In these circumstances I feel that the developers have taken every reasonable step to address the concerns of local people and their representatives. This application is for outline planning permission and I am very encouraged by the developers promise to continue to work with the local community to develop the plans.

“This development will bring much needed jobs to this part of the Selly Oak constituency and I hope now that we can acknowledge the efforts of the developers and agree proposals for outline planning permission so that we can all continue to make progress on this vital development.”
