Unemployment still a reality for many Selly Oak constituents despite national fall

Figures released by the Office for National Statistics today, Wednesday 22 January, reveal, that while nationally more people are getting into employment, in Selly Oak constituency a mere 25 people stopped claiming unemployment benefit in December 2013 compared to the month before. Birmingham Selly Oak constituency is among the top 20% of constituencies in the country with the highest number of unemployed claimants, 5.6% of people are claiming unemployment benefit compared to the national average of 3.8% .

Selly Oak MP, Steve McCabe, said:

“Of course it is good news that unemployment has fallen nationally, what concerns me is that the national figures don’t reflect what’s happening in different parts of the country. The number of people in my constituency and the West Midlands in receipt of unemployment benefit still remains above the national average. I want to know what the government plans to do to bring growth to Birmingham and the West Midlands.”
