Local MP takes action to protect Kingswood Drive bungalows

Steve McCabe MP has put questions to Andrew Lansley, the Leader of the House to raise the plight of carers who face losing Kingswood Drive respite services because of bureaucratic tricks.

On 17 February 2014 Steve met with carers of loved ones who have been receiving respite care at the Kingswood Bungalows, Kingswood Drive, Monyhull Hall Road since the purpose built, specialist accommodation opened in 2000. Steve was concerned to hear that the Joint Commissioning Team, responsible for the use of resources on behalf of Birmingham City Council and the city’s three Clinical Commissioning Groups revealed that they had a plan to wind down the accommodation and close the facilities.

In the House of Commons, Steve asked the Leader of the House what the Government’s expectations were of Joint Commissioning teams and made it clear that he was very concerned that in Birmingham they seem unaccountable and have a strategy which doesn’t appear to make financial sense particularly in relation to the bungalows which are less than 15 years old. Mr Lansley said that a £3.8 billion grant called ’The Better Care Fund’ had been rolled out across the country specifically to join up health and social care in order to sustain care in the community rather than frequent hospital admissions. Mr Lansley said that local Council’s are expected to use ‘The Better Care Fund’ primarily for the purpose of maintaining care in the community.

Following his meeting with carers and families who use the Kingswood Drive bungalows, Steve is meeting with the Director of the Joint Commissioning Team to see what can be done to save the service.

Steve said:

“It is important that the Kingswood Drive bungalows service users and carers voices are heard which is why I raised the matter in Parliament and I have arranged to meet with the Director of the Joint Commissioning Team over the next week. Families are naturally concerned about potential closure which is why I will make every effort to support them in their fight to protect the bungalows and make sure that care is not compromised.”
