St Alban’s Primary pupils get an early lesson in how to get smart with their money

Steve McCabe MP opened St Alban’s Primary School’s very first bank and offered some wise words about saving.

Older pupils in Year’s 4, 5 and 6 were introduced to the importance of saving money on Friday 28 March 2014. St Alban’s Primary launched HSBC banking services to pupils by assisting them in opening a bank account, each pupil who opened a bank account got their own mini safe to keep their savings in.

HSBC bank representative, Sandra Howes was on hand to explain how banks worked and how saving is a good habit to get into early on. Steve offered his own advice to children about the importance of being smart with money and cut the ribbon to officially open St Alban’s bank. The pupils were asked what they wanted to save for and the majority said they already had their first car in mind!

Steve McCabe MP said:

“It was great to open St Albans’ first bank for pupils, I think that it is really important that children learn from a young age the importance of managing their finances particularly because it is very easy for young people to get into debt these days.”
