Brandwood Community Centre getting people back to work

Steve McCabe MP, Birmingham Selly Oak, visited the 8 week taster course organised by the Brandwood Centre with Jobcentre Plus which helps longer term unemployed people back into work.

The scheme is organised by local activist and community campaigner Roger Dennis who has reclaimed the land at the rear of the Brandwood Centre, adjacent to the railway embankment, and is now putting it to good use. It had previously been used as a dumping ground for all sorts of rubbish and had become an overgrown jungle.

Now local unemployed people have teamed up with Roger and the Brandwood Centre and have cleared all the rubbish and cut back the jungle and are busy preparing a community garden, walkway and picnic area. The garden will be for the use of the many groups of the Brandwood Centre.

Steve said:

“The scheme that Roger and the Brandwood Centre is running is really impressive, it is great to see people who have been unemployed for a while learning new skills and also building something which will benefit the local community.”
