Season tickets up for people living in Selly Oak

Steve McCabe MP has spoken out against further rail fare increases which have hit his constituents and commuters across the country.

Since 2010, the Government has allowed the train companies to hit passengers in Selly Oak with massive fare rises of over 20 per cent since 2010, costing hundreds of pounds more for people who are already struggling with the soaring cost of living.

Last year, Steve carried out a survey about transport and asked local people for their thoughts on the cost of transport. 57% felt that the cost of using public transport is too expensive and 47% said that there should be more accountability when it comes to public transport and what public money is spent on. The survey also revealed that people felt that the Government’s approach to transport was too London centric.

Steve shared these results with the Minister for Transport but it seems that the Government decided against the views of local people and instead supported yet another rail fare rise for commuters.

Steve McCabe MP said:

“It seems clear to me that the Government are ignoring the fact that people in my constituency and across the country are struggling with the soaring cost of living. Out of touch Ministers talk about ‘fair fares for comfortable commuting’, but this is a world away from the reality for thousands of hard-up commuters living in my constituency.”
