Steve McCabe joins Homes for Britain call for decent affordable homes

Steve McCabe, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Birmingham Selly Oak, has joined the Homes for Britain Campaign to call for decent affordable homes.

Steve McCabe said:

“Under David Cameron we have seen the lowest level of housebuilding in peacetime Britain since the 1920s. This cannot carry on which is why a Labour Government will build 200,000 new homes every year by 2020.

We need to make sure people have decent homes to buy and rent, too many working people can’t afford to buy a house and so many people are trapped in poorly maintained rent accommodation. Everyone deserves a decent and affordable home and we know the Tories are not the ones to make this happen.”

A Labour Government would:

·         Build 200,000 new homes every year by 2020, which will also create up to 230,000 jobs in construction

·         Unlock the supply of new homes by giving local authorities powers to force developers who hoard land that has planning permission to ‘use it or lose it’

·         Tackle empty homes by giving councils more power to charge higher rates of council tax on empty properties and ensure new homes are advertised in the UK first, not overseas

·         Deliver a new generation of New Towns and Garden Cities and give a new ‘right to grow’ to communities who want to expand but are blocked by neighbouring local authorities
