Steve McCabe MP speaks out against large planning development in Selly Oak

Steve McCabe MP has spoken out against a planning development in Selly Oak which would see a further 267 student style bedsits built in the already heavily populated student area of Selly Oak.

Over the last few years, Steve has been contacted by countless constituents with complaints that their local communities are being destroyed by inconsiderate property developers that flout planning laws. Steve has objected to a 267 bedroom development on the grounds that Selly Oak is already saturated with halls of residents. There are over 1,000 student bedrooms in development whilst there has been no increase in student numbers.

Steve and other key consultees opposed the planning application for the above reasons. However, Birmingham City Council’s Planning Department recently approved the development subject to a number of conditions. The development will be erected on the former Rich Bitch Studios site despite concerns from key consultees that many students who live in existing landlord accommodation will migrate to the new builds effectively leaving existing HMO properties empty.

Steve McCabe MP said:

“I’m disappointed that the development has been approved having submitted my objections twice. It seems illogical to build more student accommodation when there is no demand for this and I’m concerned that yet again it doesn’t seem that the planning department are listening to local residents’ concerns. There is already a surplus of student accommodation in Selly Oak and it is unfortunate that the Council have given this development the go ahead.”
