Shadow Children and Families Minister pledges support for families with disabled children

Steve McCabe MP, Shadow Minister for Children and Families has pledged his support for families with disabled children after meeting with campaigners from charity, Contact a Family.

Steve recently met with campaigners from Contact a Family – a national charity that supports families with disabled children regardless of their condition. Steve heard from families about their experiences of caring for disabled children and the everyday pressures that they face.

One of the families Steve met were the Mathieson family, who successfully challenged the removal of children’s DLA after they have spent 84 days in hospital. The ruling announced by the Supreme Court on 8 July will have a significant impact on the estimated 500 families with severely disabled children who spend extended time in hospital undergoing treatment. As a result of the Supreme Court ruling, the charity are calling for the government to urgently act on the court's decision and scrap the unfair rule once and for all.

Contact a Family provide information, advice and support to parent carers and they bring families together so they can support each other in the community. The charity runs parent support groups for those struggling with isolation and organises family fun days out so that parents can make new friends and socialise.

Steve McCabe MP said:

“It was great to meet with parents who benefit from Contact a Family and find out more about the realities of caring for disabled children. It’s important to remember that families with disabled children give back to our community and economy in so many different ways and it was fantastic to be able to celebrate this. That’s why I’m proud to pledge my support to secure a brighter future for disabled children.”
