Unemployment rises in Selly Oak constituency

In Birmingham Selly Oak constituency unemployment rose by 0.1% on last month meaning Selly Oak is still in the 20% of constituencies for unemployment across the country.

Figures released today by the Office for National Statistics show that UK unemployment has risen in the three months to June, up 25,000 on the last quarter. This is the second consecutive quarter where the jobless rate has risen.

Steve McCabe MP said:

“It is disappointing to hear that unemployment is up in my constituency and in Birmingham it is above the national average but nothing is being done to invest and grow the economy here.

“The Chancellor says he wants to build a ‘Midland’s Engine Room’ but what I am seeing is the Chancellor telling people in the Midlands that the Government will only invest in our region if we sign up to his Metro Mayor. We need the government to stop playing politics with our region and seriously look at how we can invest and improve people’s skills and get them into jobs.”
