Local MP calls for more investment in jobs in Selly Oak and Birmingham

Figures released today from the Office for National Statistics and House of Commons Library show Selly Oak constituency is now in the top 14% of constituencies for unemployment across the whole country.

Statistics show that 4.1% of people eligible for work in Selly Oak constituency are claiming JSA or Universal Credit, this is compared to just 2.5% across the country.

Steve McCabe MP said:

“It’s clear that despite the national picture improving, the region is still behind and things are still much bleaker than people realise in Selly Oak. The constituency appears to be falling far behind the national average of 2.5% unemployment and it is likely that this trend will continue unless serious investment is made in Birmingham’s outer suburbs.  The Government need to come up with a better plan for jobs and growth in areas such as Selly Oak.”
