Steve McCabe MP calls local people to action over Planning Plight

Steve McCabe MP is calling for local people to get in touch with him if they have been affected by unauthorised developments.

Steve recently announced that he is taking the planning fight all the way to Parliament and is set to bring forward a Bill which aims to protect family homes and neighbourhoods from rogue landlords and cowboy builders. The Bill will call for a change in law and will focus on clearer local government guidelines; a right of appeal to an independent body where a planning authority decides not to take action against a breach in planning law; robust building regulation safety checks and new powers for planning authorities to fine developers who breach planning law.

Steve has been inundated with planning complaints in recent years with many people frustrated at the lack of enforcement action to tackle breaches in planning law by the local Council. He is calling on people to join him in his fight to tackle rogue landlords and cowboy builders and is keen to hear from those whose homes, neighbourhoods and communities have been affected.

In recent years, neighbourhoods have been blighted with unsightly extensions which are built under the guise of permitted development, introduced by the government in 2013. Areas like Selly Oak in Steve’s constituency where there is a large student population have been particularly affected.

Unscrupulous developers are buying up family homes in droves and tacking on unsightly extensions to cram as many students in as possible to maximise profits. Most of these extensions do not have planning permission and there are no proper checks to ensure the houses are safe to live in. To push for a new law to tackle these prevalent planning issues, Steve would like to hear from you.

Steve McCabe MP said:

“Today I’m asking for all people who have been affected by unauthorised developments to get in touch with me. I intend to make sure that local people’s concerns are properly represented in The Protection of Family Homes Bill to tackle the growing problem of rogue landlords and cowboy builders who ride roughshod over our communities.

“If you have been affected by permitted development or the planning authority has refused to take enforcement action over a breach in planning law please contact me, I would like to hear from you, you can email me or tweet me using #protectourhomes”
