Economic growth slows latest figures show

Figures released by the Office for National Statistics have revealed that the UK economy grew by 0.5% between July and September this year – the slowest growth for two years.

Figures show construction and manufacturing output fell while the service sector, the biggest part of the UK economy, grew.

Steve McCabe, MP for Birmingham Selly Oak, said:

“It is disappointing that GDP figures show that economic growth is slowing down. This is bad news for my constituents, unemployment in Selly Oak is way above the national average at 4.1% and a slowdown in key economic sectors such as construction and manufacturing is not good news for jobs.

“The Chancellor will be delivering his Autumn Statement next month; given the poor growth figures and the rise in profit warnings, we really need to see some immediate practical measures designed to help rebalance our economy and boost employment in the West Midlands.”
