Steve McCabe MP backs local businesses on Small Business Saturday

Steve McCabe MP is backing local independent businesses across his constituency to celebrate their contribution to Selly Oak as part of this year’s Small Business Saturday on December 5th.

Steve is backing local businesses to take advantage of the campaign on a key shopping day in the year in the run-up to Christmas and encouraging local people to shop locally in small firms as part of Small Business Saturday. The day aims to give a long-term boost to trade and give a lift to the high streets.

Steve visited local Indian restaurant, Dilshad; motor repair garage, Tyreco; independent wine store, Stirchley Wines and Spirits, and the recently opened P Café in Stirchley and Vegan Shop in Kings Heath. All of the business have a unique business function, the Vegan Shop is Birmingham’s biggest purely vegan retail store, it encourages discussion and debate on the many animal rights & environmental issues. The recently opened P café hosts art exhibitions and poetry readings.

Established in 1979 by father and son duo, Amrik and Krishnan, Stirchley Wines and Spirits has built up a highly regarded and reputable business, which is very much part of the local community. They sell a wide and varied selection, from imported beer and real ale, to fine wines and an unmatched selection of spirits.

Tiffin Cup nominee, Dilshad restaurant was established in 1978and has hosted locals for nearly 40 years. Manager, Sajjadur Azadi has worked in his father’s restaurant since he was 16 years old and is very proud of its history in Selly Oak.

This Small Business Saturday, consumers are being encouraged to ‘shop small’ and celebrate the contribution of entrepreneurs and small firms. Launched in 2013, Small Business Saturday brought a boost to local high streets across the country. In 2014, 16.5 million Britons visited a local independent store – 2.7m more than on Small Business Saturday in 2013.

“I’m very proud to have such a fantastic choice of local unique and independent businesses right here in my constituency. We should do all we can to thank them for the vital contribution they make to the local economy, adding to the local community and boosting diversity on the High Street.

“It will be fantastic to build on the success we achieved with Small Business Saturday in the last two years locally, which is why I’m getting fully behind the campaign again and giving my support to local businesses. There are lots of great businesses in Selly Oak and the campaign is a great way of raising awareness and helping boost trade in the run up to Christmas.”
