Don’t Stop at 999

Steve McCabe MP has joined up with campaigners from the British Red Cross for their ‘Don’t stop at 999’ initiative.

This initiative was launched after new research revealed that up to 59% of deaths from injury could potentially be prevented if more people had the knowledge and skills to carry our first aid before emergency teams arrive. As part of the initiative, Steve was given the chance to learn two simple first aid skills and has pledged his support for others to also have the opportunity to gain the confidence and learn the skills that could save a life.

The research also found that whilst 93% of people will call for an ambulance if they find someone with an injury, first aid intervention of any kind was infrequent. Around half did not attempt any first aid while waiting for the emergency medical services to arrive. The British Red Cross is now calling for more opportunities for people to learn first aid throughout their lives

“It was great to join campaigners from the British Red Cross for the launch of their ‘Don’t Stop at 999’ initiative. As part of this initiative I was able to take part and learn simple first aid skills for myself, these skills could dramatically increase survival rates in emergency situations. I will be getting behind this initiative and will encourage my constituents to learn these potentially lifesaving skills’.
