Steve McCabe MP supports the Summer Reading Challenge 2017

Steve McCabe MP is supporting this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, a campaign run by the charity The Reading Agency.

This year the theme is Animal Agents and children are encouraged to borrow and read books in order to help a detective agency of fury friends solve a mystery. To get involved in the Summer Reading Challenge all you need to do is take your child to your local library where they will receive an Animal Agents collector pack and can borrow a variety of exciting books. For every book your child reads, they will receive a sticker which will give them clues and enable them to help the Animal Agents solve their mystery.

Research has shown that reading for pleasure is a powerful factor in life achievement and that children who use libraries are twice as likely to be above average readers. The Summer Reading Challenge aims to build confidence and independent reading, while helping to prevent the dip in children’s reading levels during the summer holidays.

“Reading for pleasure can have a significant impact on the future achievements of children and young people and the Summer Reading Challenge is a really fun and interactive way to encourage children to read more. I hope that parents, grandparents and carers across Selly Oak help their children to get involved in the Summer Reading Challenge by taking them to their local library and encouraging them to sign up. Last year well over 5000 children across Birmingham got involved, it would be great to get even more children involved this year.”
