Excluding those in full time education, the number has risen to 709,000, an increase of 91,000.

The number of people claiming Jobseeker’s allowance has risen by 20,300 to 1.58 million. The number of people employed in the public sector has fallen by 111,000, the largest fall since comparative records began.

In my recent survey on the cost of living I was struck by the number of people who indicated how concerned they were about the lack of opportunity for the next generation. I share that concern. On 13 July I am presenting a Bill in Parliament calling for some action from the Government. I am asking that they take our concerns seriously and set up a Youth Employment and Training scheme paid for by a special tax on bankers bonuses.

In the early 80s I worked with unemployed young people in Wolverhampton. It had a profound impact on me as I witnessed a generation denied the life chances and opportunities they deserved. Youth unemployment continued to rise for four years after that recession. A recent poll for the Independent on Sunday reveals that 8 out of 10 people believe it's harder for youngsters to get a job now than 20 years ago. Three quarters want a tax on bankers' bonuses to help fight youth unemployment.

Some of the places he has visited include: Hoerbiger, RICE Estate Agents, Serco, Education Staffing Link, Magnet, Fitness First and PWC Access Solutions.

Anger at theft of regional assets by Tory Government

His call comes after a letter issued yesterday by the Business Secretary Mark Prisk shows that 13 regional assets are being flogged off to the highest bidder. This includes Pebble Mill and the Corus site in Birmingham. The money, however, is being put back into the Governments coffers rather than returned to the region.

Steve talks up Brum with Indian business leaders

Earlier this week I hosted a reception yesterday with leading Indian businessmen in the House of Commons. The Chairmen of some of India’s largest companies were present including Ashok Lowland and Hindustan Motors. India is reportedly the second largest source of inward investment into the UK and over 600 Indian companies have a base here. In 2008/9 over 4,000 jobs were created in the UK as a result of Indian inward investment.
