The Ministry of Justice’s recent strategy document, Transforming Rehabilitation: A Strategy for Reform, published on 9th May 2013, sets out a number of proposed reforms to the rehabilitation system in both custody and in the community.

The Chancellor has today announced further cuts of £11.5bn including 10% cuts to local government. The Chancellor has also announced that the pot of money available for Local Enterprise Partnerships to bid for will only be £10bn over 5 years in contrast to the almost £50bn that was asked for.  

Employers who take on young people may be eligible for wage incentives of up to £2,275 each.

Wage incentives are available for employers who recruit an 18 -24 year old who has been receiving benefits for at least six months through Jobcentre Plus. The programme is available to private, voluntary and community sectors and social enterprise employers.

The award is available to anybody aged 25 or under and celebrates the achievements of young people in one of four categories: first aid, volunteering, community action and fundraising.



The event was organised by Douglas Smith Sixth Form tutor at Swanshurst School. Students and staff from Swanshurst took part in the re-enactment in Kings Heath Village Square on Saturday 15 June.


They were supported by local volunteers and Tony Fox from Village Libraries.

Steve McCabe  has expressed concern at the latest seasonally adjusted unemployment figures released this morning by the Office for National Statistics.

The unemployment rate for people aged 16 and over for the UK was 7.8% for the period February to April 2013. By comparison, the regional rate for the West Midlands was at 9.4%

The unemployment rate in the West Midlands increased by 0.8%, the largest recorded level across the United Kingdom for this period.


The Centre for Retail Research (CRR) is warning that High Streets could see 20% of shops close down within five years as more people turn to the internet for their shopping.


The Centre for Retail Research points out that 16 major retailers have gone into administration this year, amounting to a loss of almost 15,000 jobs. They say that as many as 316,000 workers could lose their jobs if the current trend continues.


Steve McCabe is calling on the Government to change the Work Capability Assessment, conducted by ATOS, which are used to decide whether a person is fit for work.


A legal challenge was lodged by two people with mental health problems who claimed these tests for Employment and Support Allowance would discriminate against them.


Judges ruled that the Work Capability Assessment puts people with mental illness, autism and learning difficulties at a substantial disadvantage.
