Sainsbury’s have submitted a planning application for their latest plans for the former Battery Site in Selly Oak (land between Bristol Road, Harborne Lane and Aston Webb Boulevard). You can view the latest plans here: http://sellyoak-regeneration.co.uk/site-plan.php.

Birmingham City Council is interested in comments from the public, preferably before 25 April 2013.

Introduction

Higher energy prices are one way to achieve lower energy consumption, a desirable goal for those who want to save the planet, but higher energy costs hit hard working families, the old and the vulnerable. Is it possible to reduce costs, reduce energy consumption and switch to decarbonisation in a society like ours without exposing the poor and the vulnerable to real risks?

International Dimension

Almost a decade after it first obtained planning permission to redevelop the Hazelwell Lane site in Stirchley, Tesco is revealing updated plans to the local community. The scheme will deliver a new superstore, unit shops, apartments, public spaces, highway improvements and will create in the excess of 300 new jobs.

Speaking in a debate on Apprenticeships in March, Steve McCabe, Birmingham Selly Oak, asked:

The students were pursuing a mixture of campaigns including: lowering the voting age, gang violence, reducing the cost of bus travel, restoration of Stirchley Baths and the clean-up of Stirchley Park.

More people than ever aged 60 or over own the Railcard which was launched in 1975. The railcard offers a third off the cost of most standard and first class train tickets on the National Rail network.

New research by ATOC shows that over the last six years:

Steve McCabe gave his support for charities contributing to “Recipes for Success”, a book which shares the experiences of 14 charities who have worked with the NHS to improve patient services. The book aims to help other charities who are considering similar partnerships.

With the weather unseasonably cold and the recent news that Britain is dangerously close to exhausting its gas supplies; I’ve compiled a ‘shopping list’ of free or subsidised help provided by British Gas (the country’s largest energy provider) for its customers.

British Gas Energy Trust

Steve joined an Ofgem drive last week to increase the take-up of free services available from energy suppliers. These services are available to vulnerable people who sign up to the Priority Service Register (PSR).

Steve has written to the Chair of Birmingham South Central Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) to back South Birmingham GP walk-in Centre following reports that the service could be axed.

In his letter, Steve calls for patients to be placed at the centre of decision-making on the future shape of medical services in the city.
