In the past working-age benefits and tax credits have been up-rated each April in line with the Consumer Price Index (CPI). The Government plans instead to up-rate the majority of these benefits by 1% for the next three years. This exposes those on modest incomes to ‘inflation risk’, if the current forecasts of inflation are accurate this will mean a cumulative 4% real cut in the benefits affected.

 

 

 

Birmingham Labour MPs clashed with the Local Government Secretary in angry Commons scenes following the announcement of the local government funding settlement. Birmingham stands to lose almost half its council spending power when compared to richer boroughs in the south of the country.

 

Steve has expressed concern at the news that 300,000 homes may be pushed into fuel poverty this Christmas.

 

The Fuel Poverty Advisory Group (FPAG), who advises the Government on the issue, has warned that 300,000 homes will be pushed into fuel poverty this Christmas. The Chairman of the FPAG has said that the rising cost of gas and electricity; depressed housing incomes; and public sector cuts are to blame for the squeeze.

 

Steve has welcomed the level of response to a constituency-wide consultation on the Government’s proposals to extend civil marriage to same-sex couples.

 

Last week, Steve ran a constituency-wide consultation on the Government’s proposals to extend civil marriage to same-sex couples. The survey follows a consultation exercise with religious and faith groups in Billesley, Bournville, Brandwood and Selly Oak; as well as a Facebook poll.

 

Steve McCabe MP proposed an Early Day Motion which called for the House of Commons to recognise the huge impact the cuts to local authority grants will have on Birmingham City Council.

 

Steve McCabe MP pledged support for the Meningitis Research Foundation’s ‘Meningitis Matters’ campaign. Bringing together parliamentarians as well as leading healthcare professionals, the event marked the culmination of a day of action in Parliament, aimed at raising awareness of meningitis particularly amongst children.

 

 

George Osborne, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, made the Autumn Statement 2012 in the House of Commons today. The Statement provides an update on the Government’s plans for the economy based on the latest forecasts from the Office for Budget Responsibility.

 

The Legion is the leading provider of welfare for the Armed Forces community in Birmingham, Steve attended an event in Parliament showcasing some of the Legion’s work in Birmingham Selly Oak constituency. Steve discussed the changing face of Armed Forces welfare provision in the local community, and learnt more about the Legion’s work developing Community Covenants locally.

 

Steve McCabe MP, Birmingham Selly Oak, is calling on the Chancellor to cancel the government’s New Year 3p per litre petrol tax rise that will hit local people hard when it comes into force on 1st January 2013.
