Steve has received a letter from the Government’s Planning Inspectorate which states that local opposition to development is not the “determinative factor” when making planning decisions


The above statement from the Planning Inspectorate followed a letter to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government from Steve; who raised concerns about the decision to allow developers to build an 11.8 metre high telecommunications mast in the heart of leafy Bournville.



The environment agency have issued a flood warning for  the River Rea at Stirchley. At present there are no reports of property flooding from watercourses, but properties may be at risk.


The Environment Agency is warning residents to stay vigilant over the next few days as heavy rain falls and makes its way through the river systems. We have advised the public to stay away from swollen rivers and not to drive through floodwater.


Steve recently met with Dr Caroline Whalley (CEO) and Hugh Greenway (Managing Director) of the Elliot Foundation to discuss their plans for two primary schools in the constituency.


The Elliot Foundation, a new, not-for-profit organisation; currently serve as the sponsor of Billesley Primary School and hopes to serve Tiverton Junior and Infant School in Selly Oak starting in 2013.


Steve visited Wheelers Lane Technology College and spoke to students doing Citizenship GCSE about campaigns they are working on and asked them what they thought about giving the vote to 16 and 17 year olds.



Steve McCabe MP, Birmingham Selly Oak, has pledged his support for the White Ribbon Campaign UK, which is part of a global campaign to ensure men take more responsibility for reducing the level of violence towards women.


Steve is helping to raise awareness of the issue as part of White Ribbon Day on 25 November, a day which is also recognised as the United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Steve is calling on the Government to do more for the unemployed in the West Midlands as Labour Market Statistics reveal continued regional imbalances.


In Labour Market Statistics released today by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the unemployment rate for the West Midlands stood at 8.6%. The national unemployment rate totalled 7.8%, down 0.2% on the last quarter.


Youth unemployment (aged 16-24) fell by 49,000 on the preceding three months but stands at a staggering 20.7%.


Speaking in a House of Commons debate on child exploitation Steve McCabe MP, Birmingham Selly Oak, said many lessons can be learned from recent revelations but most importantly the victim must be the first priority.


The Backbench Business Debate on Child Sexual Exploitation was well attended by MP’s, not surprising after recent revelations of widespread child sexual exploitation.


Steve has expressed concern about the increase in inflation, which rose sharply last month.


Figures released by the Office for National Statistics said the rate of Consumer Price Index inflation rose to 2.7% in October, up from 2.2% the month before.



The men and women who serve in Britain’s Armed Forces make enormous sacrifices to protect our country. They are central not just to our national security but our national character. Remembrance Sunday provides us each with the opportunity to honour all those who have given their lives in the defence of our country and to support today’s Service community.



Steve attended the re-launch of the Brandwood Centre, which was recently refurbished after securing funding from Birmingham City Council Community Chest.
