The latest British Crime Survey shows the biggest increase in all personal crime, 11%, in a decade, which includes crimes such as theft, robbery and violence against the person. Despite this increase the Government is charging ahead with its front-loaded cuts of 20% to the police force which will lead to the loss of 16,000 police officers.

Steve McCabe has speculated that disappointing results for the Conservatives at the local elections could reflect these damaging and irresponsible cuts to our police forces.

During a Parliamentary debate on the 23rd April 2012, Steve asked Minister for Employment Rt. Hon. Chris Grayling MP how 1,100 ESA claimants who had died in the first eight months of 2011 were deemed ‘fit to work’ months earlier.

Steve also asked the Minister what steps he planned to take to investigate whether the Department’s own assessment criteria had been applied correctly in those 1,100 cases.

Liisa Wiseman manages the Foodbank which has been operational for about 5 months and deals with people who are destitute or in crisis in South Birmingham. This can often involve a range of people who have experienced a major crisis in their lives, including victims of domestic violence.

Steve believes there’s a ‘nasty whiff’ about the ‘indecent haste’ with which Birmingham City Council has quietly processed a plan to borrow £4million on a project designed to convert the old Stirchley baths into council offices. He’s called for a pause in the plan until it can be determined that it’s economically viable and has public consent.

Growth in the British economy fell by 0.2% in the first three months of 2012. The economy has now shrunk in the last two quarters, pushing Britain back into recession.

Steve McCabe MP, Birmingham Selly Oak, said:

“These figures released today are a real concern for Britain, as predicted by many the Government’s policies of severe cuts is hurting more than its working.

Steve has welcomed the joint Consumer Focus/Citizens Advice campaign which aims to help advise people who are falling behind with their energy bills.

Steve met with Vince Bateson, Head of Retail Gaming for William Hill and staff members Ben and Rita for a tour of his local branch on Alcester Road South.

Steve also got the chance to place a bet on a horse of his choice. Unfortunately Steve’s horse didn’t pass the post first, but William Hill was kind enough to donate £50 to Steve’s chosen charity, Acorns Childrens Hospice.
