The Report Back is an opportunity for Steve to update constituents and answer questions on his parliamentary and constituency activities as well as discuss local issues.

The new figures come as a leaked report from the Department of Health confirms the full costs of the reorganisation at over £3 billion. New, official figures list the costs of NHS redundancies in every community during the first year of the Tory-led Government's NHS re-organisation. Figures reveal that South Birmingham PCT has already been forced to spend £106,000 laying off staff - only for many expected to be re-employed elsewhere in the system. And this is just the first phase of redundancies - further damaging figures are expected in the summer.

Steve joined children, staff and governors at the official re-launch of Selly Oak Nursery School last week.

The event celebrated the decision by Birmingham City Council to support the day-to-day running of the nursery. The judgement follows years of wrangling between governors and Birmingham City Council over the future of the nursery.

While Steve was there he bumped into Craig and Steve who work for Frost & Snow Cupcake Bakery, a successful social enterprise set up by the Midland Heart homeless team and cupcake baker Sarah Frost.

Steve spoke with Nick Bunker, President UK & Ireland Kraft Foods, about the success of the programme. They were also joined by Richard Whitehead, Cadbury Athlete Ambassador, the current record holder and world champion for leg amputees at the 200m for the T42 category. Over 100 people attended and Cadbury Spots v Stripes volunteers brought the fun of their community events by challenging them all to play Spots v Stripes games!

Pupils at Colmore Junior School in Kings Heath were visited by Steve McCabe MP today, who urged them on in the final day of the Big Pedal competition.

The Big Pedal is the UK’s biggest schools cycling event led by the charity Sustrans. Colmore Primary School is one of 1,200 schools UK-wide that has spent the last three weeks competing against each other to get the most pupils and teachers cycling or scooting to school.

Children at Colmore Primary have completed over 1,000 journeys to and from school on two-wheels during the course of three weeks.

On the budget, Steve McCabe said:
“What we have seen from the Chancellor is a millionaire’s budget conceived by the rich for the rich, it will do nothing to promote growth or tackle unemployment.

Local and regional risk registers have highlighted serious concerns with patient safety, continuity of care and the safeguarding of children. It is astonishing that we still do not know the Government’s own assessment of the precise nature and scale of the risks they are running with the quality, safety and efficiency of our health service.

Unemployment figures released today report an increase of 28,000 which brings the total amount of unemployed people across the country to 2.67 million. The highest it has been since 1995.

Youth unemployment, amongst 16-24 year olds, rose by 16,000 to 1.042 million, a rate of 22.5%.

The figures also showed bad news for Steve’s constituency, with 8.2% of people claiming Job Seekers Allowance compared to 5.6% nationally.

Figures released today by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), revealed 12,830 people were made homeless over the periodof October to December 2011. During the same period in 2010, that figure stood at 10,870; a rise of 15.2%.

The number of people made homeless has steadily increased since mid-2010, after the Coalition Government came to power.
